Dear Allies, Since the beginning of August, 2016 youth from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Reservation have led a peaceful resistance against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The DAPL is a $3.8 billion, 4-state pipeline slated to travel under the tribe’s water source. It is also the source of water for 18 million people living downstream. The pipeline was originally routed to go under the Missouri River just north of Bismarck, ND. However, after intense public opposition, the company chose to re-route the project just 1 mile north of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's Reservation. Beyond drinking water, this river is the center and symbol of life for the Reservation. Sparked by youth engagement, tribal members put out a call to action. As a result, thousands of water protectors and land defenders from around the world have joined an encampment established along the banks of a nearby tributary. The Red Warrior Camp is comprised of native and non-native allies who are committed to stopping the "Black Snake", the pipeline, through nonviolent direct action. It has been a very empowering experience for everyone that comes to the camp! The North Dakota winter is upon us and we need to winterize the camp for our water protectors so that they can maintain their position near the pipeline corridor.
