Coming of Age Gathering
In October 2011, Conscious Alliance sponsored a Coming of Age Gathering, held by Yellow Bird, Inc., an American Native non-profit organization. The Gathering took place at one of the most beautiful and sacred sites for the Northern Cheyenne: Bear Butte, in South Dakota. 10 males and 10 females from the Northern Cheyenne Reservation participated in the gathering, with elders, speakers, and presenters guiding and chaperoning the youth while at Bear Butte.
The Coming of Age Gathering strived to reconnect Native American youth to their identities within their culture. This reconnection began through the teachings of the significance of several “Coming of Age” rites. In addition, elders and presenters addressed traditional and contemporary issues that youth may go through that can be especially difficult while at this particular age.
Following the Coming of Age Gathering, Yellow Bird, Inc. collaborated with the youths’ families for a Naming Ceremony, for the young people that did not have Native Names. They asked for the families’ participation in researching their history for familial names that may suit their children’s characteristics and personalities.
Furthermore, Yellow Bird, Inc. tries to create social change within the youth, and communities. Their goal in accomplishing this is a three-step approach.
1. Healing from the historical trauma of the PAST.
2. Addressing PRESENT day health and social issues.
3. Learning to overcome adversities and plan for the FUTURE.
The Coming of Age Gathering is based in the teachings and philosophy of the Medicine Wheel Model. Concepts such as Left Brain/Right Brain, Linear and Circular Thinking, and the Mirror Concept were integrated into activities and discussion throughout the weekend. The Medicine Wheel Model’s goal is to assist youth in realigning, reconnecting and reclaiming their sacredness. This positive cultural event promotes healthy drug & alcohol free lifestyles, and is a forum for spiritual healing.
