Together, the Non-Profit Organization and
HBR Will Bring Healthy Snacks, School Supplies, and Music
to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Conscious Alliance and Hot Buttered Rum join forces this fall for a multi-faceted
philanthropic project that brings much needed healthy
snacks and school supplies to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
in South Dakota. Conscious Alliance and Hot Buttered
Rum will kick off the “tour” on October 10th with a two-night
fundraising concert series at the Fox Theatre in Boulder,
Colorado. Following the fundraiser, which will help raise
funds for the “Back to School Snack Tour,” Conscious
Alliance will deliver will load a 24 foot box truck with
700 healthy snack bags and a variety of school supplies
to students on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The
members of Hot Buttered Rum will join them on the trip
north.
The healthy snack bags and school supplies will be given to students in grades
kindergarten through eighth at the Wolf Creek Reservation
School (with an attendance of approximately 600 students).
Recent reports indicate that almost 50% of the adults
on the Pine Ridge Reservation over the age of 40 have
diabetes, a disease greatly affected by (if not brought
upon because of) dietary patterns established in their
youth. Whole Foods Market is donating a generous assortment
of all natural, high quality food products for the cause.
Conscious Alliance is also working with dozens of Boulder businesses to accumulate
donations of notebooks, pens, folders, backpacks, colored
markers and paper; Pine Ridge Reservation schools are
in the bottom 10% of schools funded by U.S. Department
of Education and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The teacher
turnover rate is 800 times that of the national average.
This is partly because of the lack of resources and materials
made available to educators.
While delivering the gifts to the school, Hot Buttered Rum will play three special
interactive shows for the children, as well as a free
show for the larger Pine Ridge community.
